4 Signs of Age-Related Eye Problems

Like the rest of your body, your eyes are subject to wear and tear as you age. As you age, you may notice a decline in your visual acuity. Downtown Eyesdiscusses four common age-related vision problems in today’s post.

1. Sudden Eye Pain and Redness

Sudden eye pain and redness accompanied by nausea and vomiting may indicate narrow-angle glaucoma. This condition occurs when your eye fluids aren’t draining properly because something is blocking the drainage channel. As a result, the pressure inside your eyes continues to increase, compressing and possibly damaging the optic nerve. This is considered an eye emergency that may lead to blindness without prompt treatment.

2. A Dark Curtain or Floaters Flood Your Field of Vision

These are signs of torn or detached retina, which occurs when your retina separates from its underlying layer of choroid vessels, its source of blood and nourishment. Visit your eye doctor or optometrist immediately as this condition may lead to permanent vision loss.

3. Struggling to See Objects in Front of You

The macula, the retina’s focal structure, may deteriorate and develop holes over time. Also known as macular degeneration, this condition may compromise your central vision, which is why you may struggle to see objects directly in front of you. Macular degeneration is a leading cause of blindness among adults.

4. Cloudy Eyesight

The protein in your eyes may disintegrate over time and form clumps on your lenses’ surface. They may block light rays from passing through, resulting in cloudy or hazy vision. Your eye doctor may recommend removing them surgically if the vision impairment is compromising your quality of life.
